On Thursday morning, comedians Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott announced the nominations for the 2025 Academy Awards during a live broadcast from Beverly Hills.
Leading the pack is Emilia Pérez, Netflix's musical about a trans drug lord in Mexico, with 13 nominations. This includes acting nods for Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldaña, as well as a directing nomination for Jacques Audiard and a Best Picture nomination.
Following closely are Wicked and The Brutalist, each with 10 nominations, including Best Picture. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande received acting nominations for Wicked, with Erivo up for Best Actress and Grande for Best Supporting Actress. Adrien Brody also earned an acting nomination for his role as a Jewish architect who immigrates to the U.S. after World War II in The Brutalist.
The nominations were delayed twice due to the devastating fires in Southern California, which disrupted the entertainment industry just as the awards season was getting started. The annual Academy luncheon honoring nominees was completely canceled.
The 2025 Academy Awards ceremony is still set to happen on Sunday, March 2, with comedian Conan O'Brien as the host at the Dolby Theater. In a letter shared with members on Wednesday and obtained by NPR, Academy leaders stated that the ceremony "will celebrate the work that unites us as a global community."
